What is meditation? And what can we achieve with meditation?

What does Wikipedia say about meditation:
Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual focuses their mind on a particular object, thought or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state.
We can use meditation to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and pain.
People develop their own meditation technique.
(Wikipedia describes meditation while sitting down, repeating mantra’s and closing the eyes in a quiet environment)

We can use meditation as an individual, but we can also meditate in a group.
In our World we are used to ‘fight’ for our Peace, believing that we can only achieve Peace through War, what is actually a strange way of thinking.
Are there any other ways to accomplish Peace?
